Solidagro is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that is legally recognised in Belgium. It was founded in 1964 under the name Fraternité Africaine. In 1978, the organisation was renamed Bevrijde Wereld (New World in English). Since 2014, it has been known as Solidagro.
We strive for everybody’s right to food. More specifically, we are working to improve the food security situation of farmers in remote rural areas in southern countries. Together with 22 partner organisations, we are supporting projects in West Africa (Gambia, Senegal, Mali and Burkina Faso), Bolivia and the Philippines, because two thirds of the 870 million hungry people in the world are farmers. Together with farmers and our local partners in the areas in which we operate, we are looking to put solutions into practice through initiatives such as:
- The creation of vegetable gardens and wells.
- Encouraging the establishment of farmers’ organisations with strong leaders. Working together on food security and to enforce political change in their region or country.
- Stimulating the setting up of cooperatives so that farmers can purchase goods together, among other benefits.
- Providing training for farmers, for example on cultivation methods and leadership skills.
Solidagro works from the roots. The sustainability of our projects is guaranteed by ensuring that projects are supported by the farmers themselves. They are responsible for managing their own activities and investments. To further improve the sustainability and efficiency of our projects, we ensure that our partners in each country, and indeed across borders, come together and visit each other’s projects. This networking and sharing of expertise helps them to learn continuously from each other and develop new ideas.
Solidagro also works in Belgium to raise awareness around the issues of global food security. We organise all kinds of activities around this theme, such as debates and lectures. In addition, we operate a specific educational programme for young people and adults. We can provide teachers in secondary schools with educational packs and other teaching materials. They can also count on us for the necessary guidance. Solidagro can provide adult training organisations with all the materials and support necessary to set up an educational and interesting evening on the theme of global food security. Every year, we also focus on a specific sub-theme during our campaign. In 2014, this sub-theme will be the right to fertile land.
