Liever natuurlijk herstel dan aangeplante 'groene muur' in de Sahel
Het herbebossen van de Sahelregio door het planten van jonge boompjes levert vaak mislukkingen op. De 'Great Green Wall' om de Sahara te stoppen, is al jaren een constant element in de politieke discours van lokale presidenten en ngo’s, maar is verre van een realiteit. De aangeplante bomen van dure herbebossingsprogramma’s overleven vaak niet het eerste, langdurende droge seizoen. Het duurt enkele jaren voordat het wortelgestel van zo’n boompje voldoende groot is om te overleven, laat staan om te groeien.
Een spontaan natuurlijk herstel van de vegetatie – van kruiden, struiken en bomen – is kosteloos en kan veel betere resultaten opleveren.

De boeren van enkele regio’s in Niger bewijzen dat. De boeren beschermen daar de zaailingen van struiken en bomen die spontaan opschieten op en tussen hun akkers. Beschermen betekent met name dat geiten en schapen, die deze zaailingen maar al te graag opeten, weggehouden worden. Het akkerland is daar spontaan naar een agroforestry model geëvolueerd.
