Solidagro supports IBON publication on scaling agroecology in the Philippines
We are proud to present the publication of 'Barriers and Pathways',a research report from Ibon Foundation and our Filipino partners. This study, supported by the Flemish International Climate Action Programme, identifies the obstacles that are currently holding back agroecology and the opportunities for deploying this sustainable approach on a larger scale in response to the climate crisis. Because the partners are in close contact with numerous farmers, we were able to support the field research by accompanying them, bringing people into contact with each other and coordinating the whole process.
The research results show how agroecology offers a powerful response to major challenges such as food security, the climate crisis and the future of rural areas. At the same time, there are obstacles that agroecology still faces in the Philippines today. These are related to deep-rooted economic problems, where political families and large companies often carry more weight than feeding the population and building a sustainable future.
The study shows that small farmers, local food systems and community-based agriculture are already making a difference in many places, both for food and for the climate. In order for these positive examples to work on a larger scale, strong government policy is needed: policy that focuses on small-scale farmers rather than agribusiness, guarantees fair access to land and takes into account the changing climate.
With thanks to VIKAP and the Flemish Government.
